Velocity dispersion due to anelasticity; implications for seismology and mantle composition
The concept of a relaxation spectrum is used to compute the absorption and dispersion of a linear anelastic solid. The Boltzmann aftereffect equation is solved for a solid having a linear relationship between stress and strain and their first time derivatives, the 'standard linear solid', and having a distribution of relaxation times. The distribution function is chosen to give a nearly constan...
متن کاملConstraints on Mantle Anelasticity from SLR Tidal Estimates
Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) measurements of the Earth’s gravity field can be used to solve for solid Earth tides. We use those solutions to place constraints on anelasticity in the Earth’s mantle at periods of 12 hours and 18.6 years. The results imply that the anelastic parameter Q is smaller for those tides than for seismic waves. We interpret this as evidence that Q is frequency dependent....
متن کاملBulk sound travel times and implications for mantle composition and outer core heterogeneity
We present a new methodology for constraining mantle composition directly from observed seismic travel times. By measuring travel times of PCP, PcS, ScS, and P K i K P phases generated by the Chinese nuclear explosion of 21 May 1992 and recorded at cpiccntral distanccs of l o o , wc dircctly determine hulk sound travel l i ~ r ~ e s (T') for the mantle and outer core. This eliminates the need t...
متن کامل3-dimensional upper mantle velocity structure for iranian plateau revealed by pn and sn tomography
studying crustal and upper mantel structures has been limited in the iranian plateau and there has been little work done in this field. in this paper we have a primary motive to map pn and sn velocities beneath most of the iranian plateau in order to test 3-d mantle models and to develop and test a method to produce pn and sn travel time correction surfaces that are the 3-d analogue of travel t...
متن کاملSurface-wave sensitivity to 3-D anelasticity
S U M M A R Y Lateral variations in mantle anelasticity (Q) are important for understanding the Earth’s thermal and chemical structure in the mantle. In the past decades, preliminary global 3-D tomographic Q models have been developed based upon the assumption that traveltime (phase delay) anomalies are due to the Earth’s elastic (velocity) structure whereas amplitude anomalies are dominated by...
